1883年、フランスのオーベルニュで生まれたガブリエル・シャネル（Gabrielle CHANEL）は、15歳の時母親が他界し、孤児院や修道院で育つ。通称ココ・シャネル（CC）。モノグラムの由来としてあまりにも有名。1916年にクチュリエールとしてオートクチュール・コレクションを発表。当時、黒は喪服のみに用いられていたが、彼女は初めて黒を用いた。 "色を多く使う服ほど醜い"という思想のもとに、シックで着心地のよいファッションを提案、シンプル&エレガンスを追求することとなる。また、ファッションのみならずフレグランスからアイウェアやジュエリーなどを展開しており、幅広い層から人気である。
